On the ice-planet Paralan children have disappeared. The young Galakti-Pol officer Vera and the native investigator Joloran have to join forces and overcome their prejudices to solve the case.

Blurb

Almost everywhere on Paralan, temperatures drop far below the freezing point all around the year. The natives are perfectly adapted to the snow deserts, to blizzards and perma-frost soils. Of late, a new, primitive species has arrived: humans. Because of the inhospitable nature humans live in isolated tunnels under the ice. There are hardly any contacts between the species.

Now, Vera Staven gets the chance change this. Since she is the only female Galakti-Pol officer of the terran department, she is chosen to help the colleagues from Paralan solving a case.

Fifteen native baby-girls have vanished from their nests and investigator Joloran cannot pursue the only trace, because the head of the human gene laboratory refuses to talk to a Paralan. Only when Vera Staven contacts Dr. Eismann, the representative of the laboratory head, Joloran gets the information he needs. He is furious about the forced cooperation because he regards humans as stuck-up, uncivilized and egotistic. Vera also doesn't like it, since she had hoped for a female partner as is usual with Paralans. In addition, she believes the prejudice that Paralans are stupid and primitive.

The dissimilar partners don't have much time to come together. The longer the search lasts, the smaller the hope to find the children alive.
